It is well known that high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity are lifestyle choices that can put people at risk for heart disease. One’s genes can also have an impact on heart health and the likelihood of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Chronic cardiovascular disease is common among nursing home residents. Nursing home residents with chronic cardiovascular disease are frequently referred to emergency rooms during episodes of acute exacerbation and many are eventually hospitalized. Many medications that are commonly prescribed to treat such disease states have outcomes that may be influenced by a patient’s genetic makeup. Join BASE10 to discover how your genes affect heart health and learn about the implications of pharmacogenomics on cardiovascular medications.
